Grand Canyon Lodge Destroyed by Wildfire – July 2025
Date: July 14, 2025
Location: North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
Wildfire Destroys Historic Landmark
A devastating wildfire known as the Dragon Bravo Fire, caused by lightning on July 4, 2025, has destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The fire spread rapidly due to extreme weather conditions, including high temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds.
Extent of the Damage
- Over 5,000 acres burned.
- The Grand Canyon Lodge and 50–80 other structures were destroyed.
- Destroyed facilities include cabins, a gas station, visitor center, employee housing, and a water treatment plant.
Evacuations and Safety Measures
All guests, employees, and firefighters were safely evacuated. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. A chlorine gas leak from the damaged water plant also led to emergency evacuations in lower canyon areas.
Park Closure
The entire North Rim and inner canyon trails—including North Kaibab, South Kaibab, Bright Angel, and Phantom Ranch—are closed for the remainder of the 2025 season to ensure public safety and support recovery efforts.
Historic and Cultural Loss
The Grand Canyon Lodge, built in 1928 and designated as a National Historic Landmark, was a symbol of rustic architecture and tourism history in the American Southwest. Its loss is considered both a cultural and emotional blow to millions of visitors and park supporters.
Ongoing Fire Threats
Another blaze, known as the White Sage Fire, is burning north of the park and has consumed more than 40,000 acres, contributing to road closures and poor air quality across northern Arizona.
Looking Ahead
Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has called for a federal review of fire response efforts. Park authorities and fire crews are working to fully contain the blaze and assess the long-term impacts.
